5 Signs Your Tree May Need to Be Removed

Trees add beauty, shade, and value to your property — but when one becomes hazardous, removing it is the safest choice. Here are five signs a tree may need to come down.

1. Large Dead Branches

A few dead twigs are normal, but large dead limbs in the upper canopy are a red flag. They can fall without warning and seriously injure someone below.

2. Trunk Cracks or Hollow Spots

Deep vertical cracks, cavities, or a hollow-sounding trunk often mean internal decay. A tree can look healthy from the outside while being structurally compromised.

3. Fungus or Mushrooms at the Base

Fungal growth near the roots or lower trunk usually indicates decay below ground. Root rot can make an otherwise healthy-looking tree unstable.

4. A New or Worsening Lean

Some trees lean naturally, but a sudden lean — especially with cracked or lifted soil on one side — can mean the root system is failing.

5. The Tree Is Too Close to Structures

A healthy tree can still be a problem if it's growing into your roof, power lines, or foundation. In these cases, removal or careful trimming may be the right call.
